What is mass timber?

One of the key elements shaping our distinctive homes is the use of mass timber – a material that goes beyond conventional construction.

So, what exactly is mass timber?

Mass timber refers to a category of engineered wood products composed of large solid wood panels, columns, and beams that are fabricated by bonding smaller pieces of lumber or timber together. These products are used in the construction of buildings and are gaining popularity due to their sustainability, strength, and aesthetic appeal.

Common types of mass timber include

  • Cross-laminated timber (CLT): CLT is made by stacking layers of lumber at right angles and bonding them together with adhesives. This creates a strong, stable panel that can be used for floors, walls, and roofs in buildings.

  • Glue-laminated timber (glulam): Glulam consists of layers of lumber bonded together with structural adhesives. It is often used for beams and columns in building construction.

  • Laminated strand lumber (LSL): LSL is made from strands of wood that are bonded together with adhesive and compressed into solid panels. It is used for various structural applications.

  • Laminated veneer lumber (LVL): LVL is made by bonding thin veneers of wood together with adhesive. It is commonly used for beams, headers, and other structural elements.

Mass timber offers several advantages over traditional building materials such as concrete and steel. It is renewable and sustainable, as it is made from wood harvested from responsibly managed forests. Mass timber buildings can also be constructed more quickly and with less environmental impact compared to traditional construction methods. Additionally, mass timber structures can be designed to be aesthetically pleasing and can provide a warm, natural feel to interior spaces.
